Parenting a child with ADHD often requires little more effort than raising a child who has ADHD. Or maybe it just feels that way. Either way, you can quickly find yourself feeling like you're faced with an impossible task.
I'll be honest with you here. I can give you all the strategies in the world, and none of them will make a difference for you if you take the time to slow down and take care of themselves.
Is it too bold a statement?
What if I told you to take care of themselves, can be as easy as taking 30 minutes out of your day to do something that is entirely for you. That's right. Some people, such as massage, others as a manicure or pedicure, or you might want to shop. Whatever it is, you need something that is entirely your own. Nobody gets to mingle with it, unless of course you welcome them into your space.
self-care
I've seen too many parents who have been burnt. They are caught up in day to day stress for so long that they forgot how to enjoy your children, let alone how to enjoy themselves.
I was there, and it's not fun. As a stay-at-home parent, it's just too easy to see life as all of their children. But you need to recharge. Need to refuel, and you need to relax.
I know it sounds easy, but I recognize that it may just be the worst strategy I can give you.
Here is where it gets difficult. If you are not in a place where you have the energy to deal with what comes your way, you just might never be able to see how powerful all other strategies.
So I want you to schedule in some time for yourself. Go ahead and take your calendar and block out time when you're just focused on relaxing and gives your body break it deserves.
